TMA Offers Free Family Day For Eva Zeisel: The Shape of Life

TYLER, TX— The Tyler Museum of Art invites visitors of all ages to experience its major fall exhibition, Eva Zeisel: The Shape of Life, with a Free Family Day on tap from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26 at the Museum.

The program, open to the public at no cost, will include a self-guided tour of the exhibition showcasing close to 100 pieces designed by the Hungarian-born artist who revolutionized ceramic design throughout the world. Family Day festivities also will include art activities for kids, and light refreshments served in the TMA classroom.

“Adults and young visitors alike have connected with this exhibition,” TMA Head of Education Katie Powell said. “It’s been especially rewarding for the students on our school tours, who are having a wonderful time creating their own versions of Eva Zeisel’s designs, so this Family Day program is our way of sharing this experience with the entire community.”

The Shape of Life is organized by Erie Art Museum in Erie, Pennsylvania, and continues through Dec. 9 in the TMA’s Bell Gallery. The exhibition spans more than 70 years in the broad and accomplished career of Zeisel, the legendary Eastern European artisan who continues to produce household and industrial designs as she approaches her 102nd birthday.

Space for Family Day is limited, so participants are encouraged to sign up early by calling (903) 595-1001 on or before Friday, Oct. 24.

Support for this exhibition is provided by TMA Collectors’ Circle members The Byars Foundation and Amy and Vernon Faulconer. Media sponsor is CBS 19.

Last Chance for Texas

The October 26 Family Day also represents the final opportunity to view the exhibition Texas in My Soul: A.C. Cook and the Hock Shop Collection, featuring 55 historic works of early Texas art collected by A.C. “Ace” Cook, whose Bull Ring shop in the Fort Worth Stockyards has drawn visitors from throughout the world for a glimpse at a collection that holds near-mythic status. The exhibition, which was organized by the TMA and has drawn close to 3,000 visitors since opening July 27, is scheduled to move on to the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts from Nov. 20 through Jan. 8, 2009.

The Tyler Museum of Art, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. The Museum’s growing Permanent Collection focuses on early to contemporary Texas art, as well as works in decorative arts, Asian art, and prints and photographs of American masters. The TMA also is set to receive a promised gift of more than 300 works from the Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection of Mexican and Latin American Folk Art.
