December First Friday Tour Spotlights Graham Williford Collection at TMA

TYLER, TX—The Tyler Museum of Art is returning to its regularly scheduled time for its December First Friday Art Tour in conjunction with the new exhibition, The Elegant House: Paintings & Decorative Art from the Graham Williford Collection.

This month’s tour, led by TMA Head of Education Katie Powell, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 5 in the Museum’s Bell Gallery. TMA’s First Friday Art Tours are free and open to the public, but reservations are requested and may be made by calling (903) 595-1001.

The December tour will spotlight decorative objects, primarily in the form of silver and sculpture, and paintings from the collection of the late Graham Devoe Williford of Fairfield, Texas, to explore the expressions of opulence and elegance of “conspicuous consumption” in late 19th-century America, Ms. Powell said. Highlights of the exhibition include landmark paintings by American masters such as Dennis Miller Bunker, Walter Gay and Clement Grant, along with works by celebrated sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Elihu Vedder and Victor Brenner – whose 1907 bronze relief of Abraham Lincoln served as the design for the Lincoln head penny.

Support for The Elegant House is provided by the Graham Williford Foundation for American Art. Additional support for the exhibition is provided by TMA Collectors’ Circle members Sheryl Rogers Palmer, Bill Pirtle, and the A.W. Riter Jr. Family Foundation. The show continues through Feb. 8, 2009 in the Bell Gallery. Admission is free.

The Tyler Museum of Art, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Lunch is available in the Museum Café from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and the TMA Gift Shop is open during exhibition hours.
