Tyler Museum of Art Gift Shoppers Find Divine Inspiration in The Saint John's Bible Tyler, TXIf a shopper’s paradise is all about choices, choices, choices, then it’s heaven on earth with the latest offerings in the Tyler Museum of Art Gift Shop. The TMA’s latest exhibition, Illuminating the Word: The Saint John’s Bible provides divine inspiration for shoppers looking for gorgeous gifts, beautiful books and artistic accessories for all ages. Gift shop manager Maria Solis said out-of-town visitors are often eager to purchase an item as a memento of their trip to Tyler and the exhibition. In-town customers, she said, more often are looking for one-of-a-kind gifts for friends or family that indicate extra thought and effort went into the purchase. “That’s why The Saint John’s Bible exhibition-related items are so popular,” she added. “They really please everyone; both those who want a special, faith-based gift and those who want a remembrance of a wonderful time spent in Tyler.” Special books available in the TMA Gift Shop during the Illuminating the Word: The Saint John’s Bible exhibition include three volumes from what will be a seven-volume series. Each book, Gospels and Acts, Psalms, and the Pentateuch, features full-color page-by-page reproductions from this world-renowned hand-lettered, hand-illustrated Bible, which is scheduled for completion in 2007. Also available is Christopher Calderhead’s book, Illuminating the Word: The Making of The Saint John’s Bible. Calderhead, who will be at the Museum July 15 for a lecture and book signing event, gives the behind-the-scenes story of the makers of this Bible and the people who are bringing it to fruition, including Donald Jackson, calligraphic artist and senior scribe to the Queen of England. Jackson, the artistic director of the project, is still working each day to complete the Bible from his scriptorium in Wales. If your gift list includes those with an artistic flair, hand-cut quills are available from Jackson’s scriptorium, or you might opt for a calligraphy kit or illuminated lettering kit. DVDs and VHS copies of The Illuminator will certainly bring inspiration, as will beautiful prints from The Saint John’s Bible, which are suitable for framing. Solis said some of the more popular gifts include the official exhibition poster, boxed notecards, magnets, decorative crosses and prayer boxes. The Museum Gift Shop is open during exhibition hours, Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Museum is closed Mondays and major holidays. It is handicapped accessible and includes a café. For more information call 903-595-1001. |
