TMA Opens Doors of American West for Free Seniors Day March 23

TYLER, TX— All visitors age 65 and older are invited for a day of free admission and tours on Monday, March 23 as the Tyler Museum of Art celebrates this spring’s major exhibition, Scenes from the American West: The Phelan Collection.

The Museum, regularly closed on Mondays, will open its doors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 23 for Seniors Day, offering a special viewing of Scenes from the American West. The exhibition, organized by the TMA, showcases more than 60 artworks from the collection of Arthur J. Phelan, a native of Chevy Chase, Maryland, who began to stoke a lifelong fascination with the American frontier upon his first travels to the Western states in the 1950s. Since acquiring his first piece of American Western art in 1967, Phelan’s collection has grown into one of the best-known and most comprehensive of its type in the U.S.

The special day will feature tours of the exhibition at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., plus free refreshments throughout the day. The TMA Gift Shop also will be open for participants to make purchases during exhibition hours.

Frederic Remington, Albert Bierstadt, John James Audubon and Alfred Jacob Miller are among the icons of the genre represented in the exhibition, but the spotlight also widens to artists whose names are perhaps lesser-known but played no less indelible a role in capturing an accurate view of the people who shaped the American frontier—and the events they witnessed during the nation’s westward expansion.

Sponsors for Scenes from the American West are Austin Bank and Potter Minton P.C., with additional support provided by Collectors’ Circle sponsor, The Robert M. Rogers Foundation; and Corporate Member sponsors, Hibbs-Hallmark & Co. and Texas Oncology-Tyler. Media sponsor is KLTV Channel 7. The exhibition continues through May 17 in the TMA’s North Gallery.

Seniors Day participants also will have the opportunity to view the new 5th Annual High School Art Exhibition, featuring works by 33 students representing eight East Texas schools, open through April 11 in the Bell Gallery.

The Tyler Museum of Art, accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Regular hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday (closed Mondays and major holidays). For more information, call (903) 595-1001 or visit www.tylermuseum.org.
