Special Exhibition By and For Breast Cancer Survivors Opens at Tyler Museum of Art

Tyler, TX—East Texans will have an opportunity to view a unique art exhibition that focuses on women and breast cancer at Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Woman’s Cancer Journey, showing at the Tyler Museum of Art March 11–20. The 45-piece exhibition at the TMA is part of a 450+-piece collection developed by Lilly Oncology, a division of Eli Lilly and Company, in an international art competition the company sponsored in 2004. The competition was open to women from around the world diagnosed with cancer, their family members and friends, as well as healthcare professionals involved in their care. Artists from 23 countries competed for prize money to be donated in their name to the cancer charity of their choice.

“This was a unique, juried art competition that combines the visual arts with the healing arts. For the most part, the competitors were amateur artists who created these very personal artistic expressions to share with others the profound impact cancer had on their lives,” said Kimberley Bush Tomio, director of the Tyler Museum of Art.

Mrs. Tomio said the traveling exhibition, part of which was also recently in San Antonio, was brought to her attention by local oncologist and long-time TMA supporter Svetislava Vukelja, MD. Corporate member sponsors for this exhibition are Tyler Cancer Center and Trinity Mother Frances Health System.

“We are appreciative of Dr. Vukelja’s role in increasing awareness of and improving care for breast cancer patients in East Texas,” Mrs. Tomio said. “Her commitment to encouraging her patients to express their creativity and their emotions melds with the Museum’s goal of enriching the lives of East Texans through the visual arts.”

Dr. Vukelja said she believes “expressing is healing’ in terms of patient care, and that physicians also benefit from learning to express themselves through different artistic activities such as music, cooking and painting.

“Art is a powerful healing tool that is even more powerful than medicine because it causes an inner healing and that brings about rapid recovery,” Dr. Vukelja said. “It is universal and has no racial or cultural barrier. It connects all of us as human beings. It appeals to all of us because we are all, each of us, unique individuals.”

Of great interest to East Texans attending the TMA exhibition will be works created by two local artists who also battled breast cancer, Deborah Stephen and the late Peaches Brookshire. These original pieces are not part of the Lilly competition and can be seen at the Museum only during this exhibition.

The Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Woman’s Cancer Journey exhibition is open for free to the public, donations are accepted. Tyler Museum of Art exhibition hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The TMA Gift Shop is open during the same hours. The Museum Café is open for lunch Tuesday–Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Museum is closed on Mondays. To learn more about this or other exhibitions call (903)595-1001.
