SMU Art History Professor to Speak at Tyler Museum of Art Sunday

Tyler, TX—Randall Griffin, Ph.D., associate professor and chairman of the Division of Art History at Southern Methodist University, will lecture on “Modernists’ Reinvention of the American West” at the Tyler Museum of Art Sunday at 3 p.m., 1300 S. Mahon, adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus. The lecture is free and open to the public, but seating is limited and reservations should be made by calling (903)595-1001.

Dr. Griffin’s lecture topic will focus on how modern artists reinvented the American West in the 1920s and 1930s, and will discuss the works and achievements of such noted artists of that period as Georgia O’Keeffe, Paul Strand, Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, Marsden Hartley and Edward Weston.

“In my scholarship and teaching, I find the greatest pleasure in discovering unexpected connections and patterns across the cultural landscape. My love of art history is founded on the conviction that art provides a unique articulation of culture,” Dr. Griffin said. “My greatest challenges are attempting to make the past relevant to the present and encouraging students to see the world in new ways.”

Dr. Griffin received his Ph.D. in art history from the University of Delaware in 1994. He was awarded a Wyeth Fellowship at the National Gallery of Art’s Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, and has also taught at Vanderbilt University. He has authored numerous articles and book reviews, and an exhibition catalogue on artist Thomas Anshutz. Dr.Griffin has also received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Henry Luce Foundation for funding of an exhibition he curated, The Art of Thomas Anshutz, at the Heckscher Museum in Huntington, New York.

Sunday’s lecture is being presented in connection with two exhibitions currently on display at the TMA. Thirty-three Years of Collecting at the Tyler Museum of Art focuses on the Museum’s permanent collection, which includes numerous pieces from modern artists of the period Dr. Griffin will discuss, and Robert Langham: Intimate Expanse, a black and white photography retrospective that includes Western landscapes from Shiprock, New Mexico.

For more information on these exhibitions call (903)595-1001. Both exhibitions are open free to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The Museum Café is open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The Museum is closed on Mondays.
