TMA's First Friday Art Tour to Focus on Photographer Jackson

Tyler, TX—Tyler Museum of Art’s monthly First Friday Art Tour, set for November 3 at 11 a.m. will focus attention on “Capturing Culture in Action” as TMA Curator and Director of Education Ken Tomio discusses photography as featured in the current exhibition, Encanto Mexicano: The Photography of George O. Jackson Jr. The public is invited to attend, and reservations are required by calling 903-595-1001. Admission to the special docent-led tour is free for TMA members plus one guest, and $3 for non-members.

Jackson is a Texan by birth whose family moved from Mexico to Laredo during the Mexican Revolution. He considers himself bi-cultural and as such brings an interesting perspective to his subjects—folk festivals of indigenous groups in Mexico. His Essence of Mexico project began in 1990 as he traveled throughout that country, photographing over 60 different native cultures, focused on their daily lives and celebrations. Jackson’s subjects are rarely posed, retaining their autonomy from the photographer and his work, allowing them to maintain what he refers to as their “essence.”

“The outcome is a photographic art form of powerful, breathtaking and sublime images,” said Tomio, who organized the exhibition for the TMA. “His images are perfect examples of how contemporary art can sometimes transcend the constraints of reality for the enjoyment of its audience.”

Encanto Mexicano: The Photography of George O. Jackson Jr. closes at the Tyler Museum of Art November 5. Admission to the exhibition is free; gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. For more information call 903-595-1001.
