Graham Williford's America in Spotlight for March's First Friday Art Tour Tyler, TXThe resurgence of 19th-century American artists in the eyes of collectors and scholars is the focus of March's First Friday Art Tour at the Tyler Museum of Art, celebrating the exhibition Graham Williford's America. The tour is scheduled from 11:00 a.m.12:00 p.m. Friday, March 7 at the Museum, 1300 S. Mahon Ave. adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus. TMA's First Friday Art Tours are open to the public, but reservations are requested by calling 903-595-1001. The tour is free to Museum members plus one guest. Cost is $3 for non-members in addition to the exhibition fee, which is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and students, and free for children 12 and under. TMA Educational Programs Coordinator Jessica Huddleston will lead the tour, narrating the history of artwork included in Graham Williford's America, an exhibition organized by the Tyler Museum of Art to showcase the collection of Graham Devoe Williford, the art connoisseur from Fairfield, Texas, whose collecting efforts and scholarly research were instrumental in stoking a renewed interest in 19th-century art beginning in the late 1950s. Graham Williford's America includes close to 60 works of art, yet represents only a small percentage of a collection that was compiled over several decades and had come to include more than 1,000 American paintings and decorative art pieces by the time of Williford's death in May 2006. William Merritt Chase, Thomas Cole, Winslow Homer, Maxfield Parrish, John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler are just a few of the luminaries of 19th-century American art represented in the exhibition, which continues through May 11 in the TMA's North Gallery. First Friday visitors also are invited to stay for a light lunch in the Museum Café, open from 11:30 a.m.1:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and the TMA Gift Shop is available from 10:30 a.m.4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. |
