Tyler Museum of Art Welcomes Visitors to Whistler Family Day and High School Art Exhibition Reception

Tyler, TX—Tyler Museum of Art will focus all eyes on children and young artists March 4, with two important events. The Third Annual High School Art Exhibition opens in the TMA’s Carmichael Gallery that day with a reception and awards ceremony for the participants set for 2–4 p.m. Younger children and their families will be treated to a special Family Day in conjunction with the exhibition James McNeill Whistler: Selected Works from the Hunterian Art Gallery, also from 2–4 p.m.

The Annual High School Art Exhibition is a juried show, and will feature some 40 works this year from senior art students at Robert E. Lee, John Tyler, Whitehouse and Bishop T. K. Gorman high schools. Initial selections in the competition were made by art teachers from each school. Judging the top winners in the exhibition will be art professors Curtis Watson from Texas College, Chris Stewart from Tyler Junior College and James Pace from University of Texas at Tyler.

“The Tyler Museum of Art is always eager to encourage and support young artists,” said Ken Tomio, TMA curator and head of education. “We view this exhibition as a portfolio-building experience for these young artists. We hope this event encourages them to continue developing their talent and pursuing post-high school art education.”

The Whistler Family Day event is sponsored by the East Texas Chapter, The Links, Inc. Art activities planned for children as tie-ins to the exhibition include scratch-art “etchings,” life-sized self-portraits and rubber stamp bookmarks. Refreshments will be provided in the Museum lobby. A Family Gallery guide will also be provided for self-guided tours of the James McNeill Whistler: Selected Works from the Hunterian Art Gallery exhibition. Cost for the Family Day activities, which includes admission to the exhibition, is $10 per family. Reservations are requested and can be made by calling 903-595-1001. Children attending the Family Day activities must be accompanied by an adult.

Regular admission to the Whistler exhibition, which closes in Tyler on April 29 and returns to Scotland, is normally $8 for adults, $6 for seniors 65+ and students with IDs, $3 for children 12 and under, and free admission for children two and younger. TMA members are also admitted free. Admission is always free to the Third Annual High School Art Exhibition, which will be shown in the TMA’s Carmichael Gallery through March 25.
