Workshop, Lecture, Tours and Other Special Events Highlight New TMA Exhibition

A new exhibition, The Eyes of Texas: The Lone Star State as Seen by Her Artists opened at the Tyler Museum of Art on Friday, September 17 and continues through January 2, 2005.

The works in this exhibition make a powerful statement about the artistic excellence of Texas artists, who, because of their “regionalist” status, were often relegated to a secondary position in the history of American art. Today there is a resurgence of interest in early Texas art, accompanied by a growing esteem for the talent it reflects. The works in this exhibition will provide an opportunity to rediscover and reconfirm the Texas heritage of land, people and history.

This exhibition features over 60 paintings and works on paper from the collection of Dallasites Bill and Mary Cheek. The Cheek Collection is one of the most important private collections of “early” Texas art, generally regarded as artwork produced by Texas artists on Texas subjects and themes prior to the end of World War II.

A variety of events are being offered by TMA in conjunction with the exhibition. First Friday Art Tours are designed to further the understanding and appreciation of art around a casual social atmosphere. The tours are scheduled for October 1 and November 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The tours are free for TMA members plus one guest. Non-member price is $3 and reservations are required for all attending.

There will be a Family Day September 26 from 2 to 4 p.m. This free family event features refreshments, art activities, artist demonstrations, and a performance by the Tyler Junior College Academy of Dance.

Dr. William Reaves will present a lecture on October 7 entitled “Reconsidering Early Texas Art and Artists: Images that Formed the Texas Legacy”. Reaves is co-founder and chair of the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA). A reception beginning at 5:30 p.m. precedes the lecture. The reception and lecture are free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Please make reservations by calling 903-595-1001.

An Adult Watercolor Workshop is set for November 6 and 7 from 1 to 4 p.m. The class is limited to 12 students, and the cost is $35 for TMA members, $45 for non-members. Please call 903-595-1001 to make reservations.

A special Seniors Day in conjunction with the exhibition will be November 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with refreshments and tours on the hour. The event is free and open to all area senior citizens.

The Museum Café offers light lunches Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
