TMA Lecture Speakers to Share Details on Chatsworth

Tyler, TX—The Tyler Museum of Art will present two English experts on the art, gardens and history of Chatsworth during the Fall Lecture Series in conjunction with the current major exhibition, The Devonshire Inheritance: Five Centuries of Collecting at Chatsworth. The lectures will be presented at 2 p.m. each day at the Wise Auditorium on the Tyler Junior College campus, directly across the street from the TMA at 1300 S. Mahon.

Chatsworth, recognized as one of England’s leading “Treasure Houses,” has been the country estate of the Cavendish family—the Dukes and Duchesses of Devonshire—since the mid-16th century. Chatsworth draws thousands of visitors from around the world each year who tour the grand mansion, its beautiful grounds, and view the exquisite collection of art, jewelry, sculpture, porcelain, rare scientific objects, books and other treasures collected over five centuries by one of England’s most prestigious families. The Tyler Museum of Art is the final venue in the seven U.S. cities tour for The Devonshire Inheritance exhibition which contains some 250 pieces from Chatsworth, including many from the family’s private quarters which are not available for public viewing at the estate. The exhibition closes October 23 at the TMA, and organizers say it is unlikely a Chatsworth exhibit of this size and variety will tour the U.S. again.

Simon Seligman, Chatsworth promotions and education manager, will give an overview at the October 11 lecture on “England’s Finest Private Treasure House: Chatsworth and the Devonshire Collection.” On October 13, Seligman will present “The History of the Gardens at Chatsworth: 1550–2005.” Since 1992 Seligman has been responsible for all visitor educational programs about the house and gardens at Chatsworth. Since 1996 he has had the added responsibility of promoting the estate, including writing guidebooks and other interpretive materials. Seligman, who has a degree in History of Art from the University of Warwick, has lectured internationally about private house museums and other subjects connected with the Chatsworth collection.

Deborah P. Gage will be the speaker for “Chatsworth: The Paintings and the Decorative Arts” on October 12. Gage grew up in Kenya and the United States, and completed her education in England. She attended the Study Centre of the Fine and Decorative Arts at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Gage is internationally recognized for her work as an art historian, art dealer, writer and lecturer. She serves on the Getty Paintings Council in California, and is on the boards of the Edith Wharton Restoration/The Mount in Massachusetts, The Royal Oak Foundation in New York, and the Michael L. Rosenberg Foundation in Dallas. She is a member of the executive committee of the French Porcelain Society, a trustee of the New Towner Cultural Centre in Eastbourne, East Sussex, U.K., and is a director of the Kenya board of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. She also founded The Charleston Trust in 1980, established to save Charleston Farmhouse in Sussex, England, which has been called “one of the most difficult and imaginative feats of restoration current in Britain.” The house, contents and garden were opened to the public in 1986.

Tickets to the lectures are available for $8 each for TMA members, $20 for non-members, and $18 for seniors and college students. Discounts are available when tickets are purchased for the entire series. Ticket price includes admission to the exhibition. Tickets will also be available at the door the day of the lecture, space permitting. Visitors should note that extra parking for the event is available at no charge in the lot adjacent to Pat Hartley Field, just east of the Museum, on the TJC campus.
