August First Friday Art Tour Spotlights Texas in My Soul: A.C. Cook and the Hock Shop Collection

Tyler, TX—Fort Worth art collector and historian Morris C. Matson, known throughout the Texas art world as the "unofficial docent" of A.C. Cook's Bull Ring, will bring his insights on pioneering artists of the Lone Star State 135 miles to the east as he leads the August First Friday Art Tour at the Tyler Museum of Art.

The tour, scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon on Friday, Aug. 1 in the TMA's Bell Gallery, will spotlight selected works from the new exhibition, Texas in My Soul: A.C. Cook and the Hock Shop Collection. The exhibition features 55 historic works of early Texas art collected by Matson's longtime friend and fellow art aficionado A.C. "Ace" Cook, whose Bull Ring shop in the Fort Worth Stockyards has drawn visitors from throughout the world for a glimpse at a collection that holds near-mythic status.

TMA's First Friday Art Tours are open to the public, but reservations are requested and may be made by calling 903-595-1001. The tour is free to TMA members plus one guest, and costs $3 for non-members.

"Having someone with Morris' expertise and passion for the collection leading our First Friday program makes this tour particularly special," TMA Head of Education Katie Powell said. "Texas in My Soul is a landmark exhibition for the Museum, and Morris lends a vast knowledge – with an infectious sense of humor – to any discussion of this vital period in art history. We're thrilled to have him here, and he should make this a fun event for everyone who comes out on Friday."

The Hock Shop Collection includes major paintings by scores of the Lone Star State's most celebrated and lesser-known artists. Highlights of the collection include such storied works as Frank Reaugh's Margaret's Peak (1909), Douglas Chandor's intimate portrait of Alfonso Harrison (1933), Dawson Dawson-Watson's signature image of a Texas prickly pear in full bloom, Flowers of Silk (1928), and the earliest known painting of the Texas state capitol, Julius Stockfleth's State Capitol, Austin (1888).

"As the only docent Ace has permitted to serve at the Bull Ring, I have seen museum builders, directors and curators, university deans and professors, artists, art dealers, collectors, journalists and students from all over the world visiting," Matson said. "It's thrilling to see this collection beautifully arranged in a museum gallery, which is something I know gives Ace an enormous amount of pride."
