TMA Announces Family Day Activities for Sunday, May 20 Tyler, TXChildren will have a great day Sunday at the Tyler Museum of Art's free "Mexican Folk Art Family Day," scheduled from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Activities include learning how to make "Papel Picado" the cut tissue paper art so popular at Mexican celebrations, bright and colorful "Fiesta" paper weaving, sculpting fanciful clay animals, and a fun Family Gallery Search to win a prize. The first 30 children registered for the event will also get to decorate their own "mini piñata." All the art activities are coordinated to enhance the tour of the current TMA exhibition, Past/Present/Future: Folk Art of Mexico; Selected Works from the Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection of Mexican and Latin American Folk Art which opened May 5 and runs through January 6, 2008. "Children love this exhibition because the colors are so bright, the artwork is engaging, and each display is very different from all the others," said Kimberley Tomio, TMA director. "It's the perfect exhibition to introduce young children to the treasures found in art museums, and to encourage their own creativity." All of the Family Day Art activities are free, as is admission to the exhibition. Reservations are requested, and can be made by calling 903-595-1001. Tyler Museum of Art is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and is located at 1300 S. Mahon, adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus. The TMA is wheelchair accessible. |
