Boeckman Collection Featured in TMA's First Friday Art Tour Tyler, TXStephen Vollmer, guest curator for Tyler Museum of Art's current exhibition, "Past/Present/Future: Folk Art of Mexico, Selected Works from the Laura and Dan Boeckman Collection" will be the featured speaker at the First Friday Art Tour, set for August 3 at 11 a.m. Vollmer will discuss various textiles, masks and carved wooden figures that are significant parts of the collection. Reservations are required for the event and can be made by calling 903-595-1001. Admission to the special tour is free for TMA members plus one guest, and $3 for non-members. The Boeckman Collection is considered one of the nation's premier collections of modern and contemporary Mexican and Latin American art. The Boeckmans, who live in Dallas, compiled the collection during many trips to various Central and South American locales. While their entire collection consists of more than 700 pieces, only about 80 works are being shown at one time at the TMA due to limited gallery space. The Museum is rotating certain pieces in and out of the show so visitors see different artwork during the duration of the exhibition. A special bi-lingual gallery guide is available, and artwork labels are printed in both English and Spanish. In addition to the Mexican folk art exhibition, the TMA is also featuring two other shows which are drawing regional attention. Earth & Sky: The Pastels of Josephine Oliver-Travis (19081991) will be exhibited through August 19, and Curator's Choice: Selections from the Permanent Collection will be shown in the Bell Gallery through January 20, 2008. Past/Present/Future: Folk Art of Mexico will be shown at the Tyler Museum of Art's North Gallery through January 6, 2008. Admission is free to all the current TMA exhibitions. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, and 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays. The Museum Café will be open during the First Friday Tour for those who would like to enjoy a light lunch. The Museum Gift Shop features a number of items and art books coordinated with the Mexican folk art exhibition. For more information call 903-595-1001. |
