Art in August Enjoy an array of art and events during the month of August at the Tyler Museum of Art! Treasures of Heaven and Earth: The Dr. James R. and Ann Peltier Collection of Carved Chinese Jade Be sure to see Treasures of Heaven and Earth: The Dr. James R. and Ann Peltier Collection of Carved Chinese Jade. This exhibition of beautifully carved jade objects opens to the public on August 5 and continues through September 26, 2004. Several events will be held in conjunction with this exhibition. A First Friday Art Tour will be held at 11:30 on August 6. Come enjoy this special guided tour to gain a broader perspective and deeper understanding of the exhibition. Admission is free for TMA members plus one guest. Admission to the general public is $3. Reservations are required (903-595-1001). A reception wil be held on Sunday, August 8 from 3:005:00 p.m. Dr. Peltier will talk about his passion for collecting jade when he delivers remarks at 3:30 p.m. The exhibition and the reception are free and open to the public. Texas Art in the Permanent Collection On August 6 Texas Art in the Permanent Collection opens. This exhibition will feature some of the Museum's early Texas pieces produced between 1900 an 1960. Included are a recently acquired painting by Murray Bewley, a lithograph by Jerry Bywaters, a pastel sketch by Rosalie Speed, and a portrait of Norman Rockwell by Harry Worthman. A special showing of selected Norman Rockwell lithographs will accompany the Rockwell portrait. A lecture will be presented by Scott Grant Barker, co-founder of Collectors of Fort Worth Art, titled "The Open Window: Murray P. Bewley, Fort Worth, and the Wider World of Art" on August 26 from 5:007:00 p.m. A reception will be held before the lecture. The lecture is free, but reservations are required (903-595-1001). John Warden MacKenzie: The Artist as Messenger Don't miss the colorful works of John Warden MacKenzie in this exhibition opening August 12 and continuing through Spetember 12. MacKenzie's compositions emerge from his imagination, flowing freely onto paper and canvas with a fluid precision that results in a kaleidoscope of curves, colors and movement. Museum Notes There will be a Docent Luncheon on August 30 from 11:301:00 p.m. for new and returning docents to get to know each other. There is stll time to volunteer for these exciting positions. If you like art and children, then you will love being part of our docent program at TMA. Docents give guided tours to school-aged children and lead art activities that correspond to the exhibition. The Museum's education department provides training to become a docent; contact the Education Department at 903-595-1001.
