Tyler Collects III: The Watson and Emma Wise Collection September 12, 2002January 19, 2003 Miss Kimball, ca. 1760, by Allan Ramsay; oil on canvas. The Watson and Emma Wise Collection of Art The art collection developed by the late Watson Wise and his wife Emma of Tyler includes works from the 15th through the early 20th centuries. The Tyler Museum of Art will be presenting a selection of works from this extraordinary collection this fall. The exhibition will include portrait, genre and landscape paintings from Europe. An oil-sketch portrait of Napoleon, attributed to Jacques-Louis David (French, 1748-1825) and a portrait of a Miss Kimball by Allan Ramsay (Scottish, 1713-1784) will be included. Ramsay, the son of a poet, studied in London, Edinburgh and Rome. In Italy, he was in contact with painters of the Baroque style, which was in vogue at that time. When he returned to London in 1739, he initiated what is known as the "English Noble Portrait." He is best known for his portraits of women. The portrait of Miss Kimball demonstrates Ramsay's beautiful and intimate painting style. There will be a special reception honoring Mrs. Wise and celebrating the opening of the exhibition held on September 12 at the Museum. The exhibition and reception are free and open to public. TMA is supported by its members, the City of Tyler, and Tyler Junior College. The Tyler Museum of Art is located on the east side of the Tyler Junior College campus at 1300 South Mahon.
