Texas Art in the Permanent Collection
August 6–September 5, 2004

The Tyler Museum of Art's Permanent Collection continues to develop in areas where it is historically strong–contemporary Texas art–and more recently with works created by Texas artists prior to 1970. "Early" and "modern" Texas artists, both men and women, documented in visual form the unique qualities of the land and its inhabitants and helped develop artistic movements in the region.

Texas Art in the Permanent Collection (August 6–September 5, 2004), featuring both new and old acquisitions of Texas art in our Permanent Collection, introduces the public to this new direction for the Museum. The second work acquired by the Museum, Charles Umlauf's (1911–1994) Angel of the Annunciation, is in the Family Activities Center gallery. More than 20 years later the TMA added the next group of art works in this category when 45 prints by the exceptional Texas printmaker Coreen Spellman (1905–1978) were gifted to the Museum by her brother.

The newest additions came within the last two years. An enchanting painting by Fort Worth artist Murray Bewley (1884–1964) was the 2003 Collectors' Circle gift to the Permanent Collection. Last year the Museum purchased an important 1946 portrait of Norman Rockwell painted in his studio by Harry Worthman (1909–1989), along with photographic studies and a sketch. (A small selection of prints by Norman Rockwell will be exhibited with the Worthman portrait.) Other Texas artists included in the exhibition are Lucie Harris Locke (1904–1989), whose painting titled Artificial Respiration–First Aid Class, 1942 is a gift from Cherry Rainone of Arlington, Texas. David Bates, Jerry Bywaters, Tom Broad, Keith Carter, Kelly Fearing, Robert Langham, Ancel E. Nunn, and Rosalie Speed are also represented.

Most of the works by Texas artists included in this exhibition are being exhibited for the first time. In the future the Museum hopes to acquire additional works by other artists for both the early and contemporary Texas art collections.

A permanent collection defines a museum's identity and creates a focus and a mission that directs the exhibitions and programs the institution presents to the public. It is also a way for an individual to leave a lasting and tangible gift to the community and to the public at large. Because of the generosity of many, the Tyler Museum of Art's collection includes superb works of art and continues to grow. The gifts, bequests and purchases that the Museum has received over the years will be shared with others in a way that will educate, inspire and encourage a quest for knowledge and present a source of reflection.
