Illuminating the Word The Saint John's Bible Through September 3, 2006 The Tyler Museum of Art is proud to present an exhibition of historic and artistic significance in the summer of 2006. The Saint John’s Bible was born of the lifelong dream of Donald Jackson, scribe to England’s Queen Elizabeth, and commissioned by Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Smithsonian magazine described it as “one of the extraordinary undertakings of our time.” Written with quills on vellum, scribes and artists working in Monmouth, Wales are utilizing age-old calligraphic techniques to create a modern manuscript: egg yolks, gold, silver and platinum in the illuminations; goose quills and hand-ground ink on calf-skin vellum for the text. From its commissioning in 1998 until its scheduled completion in 2007, a team of scribes and artists will have created over 1,000 pages of text to be bound into seven volumes. The Tyler Museum of Art will show nearly 50 pages from this monumental artistic endeavor. Promotional events for this exhibition will be ongoing from now until August 2006. Opportunities for underwriting are available for both the exhibition andspecial events. The exhibit at the Tyler Museum of Art will be the first and only opportunity to view this incredible exhibition in Texas, and we invite you to join us in presenting this significant event to all East Texans and our surrounding neighbors.
