World Premier of DUGOUT by Terry Allen

On Friday, May 17, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., a major new installation by Terry Allen will premier at Pillsbury and Peters Fine Art in Dallas. Entitled Dugout, the exhibit will consist of approximately fifty framed works and six constructed "stages", highlighting the colorful lives of the artist's parents: a ballplayer born on a farm in Missouri in 1886 who runs away from home in his early teens to play baseball; and a piano player born in Oklahoma in a half-dugout (a small house built half-in and half-out the side of a hill) in 1905, daughter of a religious fanatic.

The exhibition is the first comprehensive Dallas showing of the work of one of the greatest living Texas artists. According to Allen, "Dugout…is about another America, an America that is lost. The time span of the piece runs from the end of the 19th century across the first half of last century and stops at the cusp of the start of the 'new wilderness', shortly after the breech made by the atomic bomb. It is an America that no longer exists…"

Born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1943 and subsequently raised in Lubbock, Texas, Terry Allen earned his B.F.A. from Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1966, from which time he has been a successful independent artist in a wide variety of media including musical and theatrical performances, sculpture, painting, drawing and video, and installations which incorporate any and all of these media. Since 1987, Allen has resided in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife of 40 years, Jo Harvey, the well-known actress and author.

Allen's work is included in major public collections throughout the United States as well as in selected museums in Europe. He has received numerous commissions from corporations and municipalities and has been awarded prestigious fellowships—three from the National Endowment for the Arts, another from the Guggenheim Foundation. In 1997, he was inducted into The Buddy Holly "Walk of Fame" in Lubbock.

This exhibit has been organized in collaboration with L.A. Louver Gallery in Venice, California, where the exhibition will subsequently be shown. On Thursday, May 30, Terry Allen and the Panhandle Mystery Band will perform at 7:00 p.m. in the Horchow Auditorium at the Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 N. Harwood at Ross. The performance will feature Jo Harvey Allen. Tickets may be purchased at www.wordspace.org or by calling 214-821-9671.
