Pillsbury and Peters Fine Art of Dallas to Open Three Exhibitions On February 1st: Roger Winter: Urban Naturalist, Recent Paintings; Otis Jones: Paintings and Works On Paper; Steven Price: New Constructions
Beginning Friday February 1st with a reception honoring the artists from 6-8 p.m., and extending through March 9th, Pillsbury and Peters Fine Art presents exhibitions of work by three Texas artists, Roger Winter, Otis Jones, and Steven Price. Roger Winter's art is a journey in self-discovery. It bears witness to the ability of painting to create a unique sense of time and place, which in turn impacts our understanding of the world in which we live. He describes himself as a photorealist because of his use of photographs and the apparent realism of the scenes he paints. Winter applies paint in rich, textural passages and manipulates his compositions to where they may diverge substantially from what the camera saw. He compares his working method to that of collage, in which elements that already exist find a place in the final work of art. There is no intent to transcribe literally what he finds, merely to exploit the canny ability of the camera to organize information conveniently on a two-dimensional surface. Roger Winter began his career in 1961 after receiving his MFA from the University of Iowa. He began exhibiting in 1962 with his first solo exhibition coming in 1963 at Atelier Chapman Kelly in Dallas, Texas. He continued to exhibit throughout Texas and in 1984 began exhibiting at the Fischbach Gallery in New York. In 1963 he also began teaching at Southern Methodist University where he spent 26 years on the faculty and influenced the careers of many younger artists including John Alexander, David Bates, and Dan Rizzie. In 1982 he published Introduction to Drawing followed by the widely acclaimed On Drawing in 1991. The artist currently resides in New York. Otis Jones received his B.F.A. degree from Kansas State College in Pittsburg, Kansas in 1969 and completed the graduate program at the University of Oklahoma in 1972 where he was offered his first one-person exhibition. He had early exhibitions in Wisconsin, Louisiana, New Mexico, California, and Kentucky before his work was introduced to Dallas audiences at DW Gallery in 1979. Developed over a thirty-year period, the paintings and works on paper of Otis Jones have grown more restrained and geometrically spare than ever before. He works with the plainest, most unremarkable materials, shapes and colors, coaxing them into delicate visual allusions to themselves. His palette includes neutrals, rich earth tones and blues. Close inspection reveals remains of the artist's hand and brush strokes that give the work an appealing rawness. Steven Price of Fort Worth graduated from the University of North Texas with a BFA in sculpture in 1990. Since finishing his education Steven Price has been working with crates and pallets, objects of the commercial shipping world. These simple minimal boxes have a standardized appearance which is the basis of the design. The icons on the crates become the imagery and plastic laminate covers the sculpture to beautify the surface. The crate no longer functions as a box to protect engaging objectsthe crate becomes the engaging object. Steven began showing his work in 1994 with a solo exhibition in Denton, Texas. Since then he has had many solo and group exhibitions including shows in Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Little Rock, and New York. He is also included in many prestigious private collections in Dallas, Fort Worth, New York and San Francisco. This will be his first exhibition with Pillsbury and Peters Fine Art.
